Welcome to “Grandmothers”

Welcome to Grandmothers, the joint Project taking place at five Melbourne Museums from May to October 2018.

Featuring stories of grandmothers from across Melbourne, Multicultural Museums Victoria (MMV) presents its inaugural joint project – ‘Grandmothers’. Through five extraordinary exhibitions and accompanying events, join us in celebrating the accomplishments, wisdom and the central role of the grandmother in Chinese, Italian, Greek, Muslim and Jewish communities.

The Grandmothers Project is supported by Gandel Foundation across the five Museums.

From St Kilda to Carlton, the CBD to Thornbury, join us for a celebration of these women who are loved, and revered, but whose voices are rarely heard publicly, and whose roles are often not formally recognised. Our grandmothers feed us, nurture us, and are the givers of knowledge and wisdom. They are storytellers and survivors.

“Grandmothers” will present a joyful, fresh and nuanced representation of their role and significance across cultures. So honour your grandmother – whether she is a nonna, bubbe, jadda or yiayia, wàipó, a grandma or a nanna – and come along to the unique, colourful, moving, multicultural, celebration that is the Multicultural Museums Victoria ‘Grandmothers’ project.
